The Roi poem

Walking with mama by my side
'showing me the grasses that I could eat.

When on the horizon a mob of brumbies appeared
mama whispered softly, hide in the grass son and hide your ears.
I lay in the grass the sun was warm and I fell asleep
when I awoke mama was gone.

Hungry and thirsty I called out for her
but all I could hear was the wind.

Tired, hungry I lay down closing my eyes
that's when I saw two sparkling stars looking at me
and a soft voice putting me to sleep.

The two sparkling stars I saw are Ian's eyes
he had picked me up and brought me to Bililuna
and put me on a carpet of green grass.

A call for help went out across the land
for a young foal is in need, he lost his mum a week ago
and we think he may be two or three weeks old.
We've done the best we can for him
but now he's growing very weak
Please help: what can we do?

Donations for specialised formula were called for
from brumby supporters in the land and they didn't disappoint.

For Billy who is now called Roi, is living in Broome
and he has found a friend called River, who is so enchanted
with Roi's ears, that whenever he gets the chance, he nibbles them.

    About

Read about our latest work in WA, Roi, an orphan from a remote community.

Roi was found without his mother wandering near the Indigenous community of Bililuna/Mindibungu south of Halls Creek on the Tanami Track in the East Kimberley. He was taken into care by a worker at the community who contacted us to ask for advice. Roi was existing only on the scanty green grass in the yard.

Two of our volunteers, Jen and Louise, drove out to collect Roi and brought him to safety on the back seat of their vehicle. It was a 1600 km round trip.

Roi was weak but very curious, refused to drink milk from a bottle so Jen used a syringe to get him drinking, which he loved.

He was keen to meet Jen’s other horses and saw River eating hay. So Roi tried it too.

That was the beginning of Roi’s new life. Nikki’s mare Kishani took on caring for Roi and he now sees her as his mother. Jen persists with several feeds of milk and lucerne hay each day, Roi goes for gallops in the big yard and now goes with Kishani over the hill to the beach.  Roi wasn’t at all surprised to see the vast Indian Ocean and is happy to canter in the shallows.

Wild Horses Kimberley Incorporated thanks all the people who sent donations to pay for the fuel and feed for Roi.

We also thank our volunteers Jen, Louise and Nikki for their tireless work caring for our gorgeous boy Roi.
