]]><![CDATA[Orphan foal update]]>Thu, 03 Oct 2024 16:00:00 GMThttps://www.wildhorseskimberley.com/blog/orphan-foal-updateWe brought 3 orphan foals in recently, two from Balgo community in the far eastern Kimberley and one from Waterbank, near Broome.

In Balgo little colt Onyx was found abandoned by his herd, stuck in mud. He was pulled out by local man Mick, who washed him and fed him skimmed milk till we could get there. After a long trip and a vet check, he managed to gradually recover from the mud he’d swallowed. Bottle feeding was every few hours.

Onyx is now 8 weeks old and has attached himself to mare, Athena, and is growing very fast.

Again we were called out to Balgo by Mick for an orphan filly whose mother had been shot. Little Pixie survived the trip and after a long rest began drinking and perked up quickly. Jen was busy feeding them both with some help from others when yet another orphan foal arrived.

This one, a filly we called Elli, was also found abandoned.  Elli wouldn’t drink from a bottle but was happy to be fed by syringe.  She and Pixie became close friends and now stay together though Pixie is the cheeky one and Elli is curious about everything.
They are both tiny but now drink from a bucket, as does Onyx.

]]><![CDATA[Our recent news]]>Wed, 18 Sep 2024 16:00:00 GMThttps://www.wildhorseskimberley.com/blog/our-recent-newsWe've been on two trips to Balgo; two 18 hour trips to bring in foals that lost their mothers.

One 2 week old colt was found stuck in mud and was pulled out by Mick, who called us. Our volunteer Jen Stevenson drove out to collect it and we managed to help it survive. We've called him Onyx. He's a cheeky colt and has been adopted by Jens mare who adores him.

A week later Mick called again with a 2-week old  filly whose mother had been shot by tourists.  She's still weak but drinking well and seems to be improving.  She's tiny.

​We've managed to raise some funding, not much yet, to help cover costs of foal milk,(Profilac), fuel and vet fees, but we'll need more. It's foaling season now so we're hoping there won't be any more crisis, but we're ready just in case.

]]><![CDATA[Latest Rescue at Balgo]]>Mon, 05 Aug 2024 16:00:00 GMThttps://www.wildhorseskimberley.com/blog/latest-rescue-at-balgoThis foal was found yesterday at Balgo, stuck in mud, and with no parents.  Michael pulled her out and washed her down and he's fed her on skim milk till we get out there.

Jen will be leaving at 3am to go out tomorrow and bring her in, an 18 hour return journey.  Luckily there's a full bag of Profilac milk for foals on hand. 

No name yet but she is doing well.  More news to come!
